Job Description
The General Manager of Maintenance & Repair (M&R) leads maintenance and repair operations for port terminal equipment and machinery. This role is responsible for directing a union workforce in a 24/7 operating environment while maintaining a strong focus on safety, customer service, labor relations, equipment asset management, and equipment availability.
The General Manager develops strong customer relationships by understanding operational needs, contract requirements, and service expectations, and by implementing effective strategies to meet those needs.
Key Responsibilities

Lead and manage mechanics and lead personnel, including work assignments and performance evaluations.

Ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of maintenance and repair operations.

Plan daily staffing and shift assignments to meet operational demands.

Support the development and enforcement of safety policies and procedures.

Maintain positive labor relations and ensure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement (CBA).

Oversee payroll, scheduling, inventory management, and parts ordering.

Monitor work quality, review completed repairs, and implement continuous improvement initiatives.

Participate in hiring, training, and performance evaluations of staff.

Manage workers’ compensation processes and employee accommodations as needed.

Provide regular updates to senior leadership on safety, operations, and labor relations.
Qualifications & Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience, preferably in maintenance, repair, or union environments.

Experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) (GE, Fuji, Siemens, Omron preferred).

Familiarity with engines, hydraulic systems, refrigeration systems, container and chassis equipment, and container cranes preferred.

Valid driver’s license and TWIC card required.
